Mississauga competed against the City of Edmonton, the City of London and the Regional Municipality of Halifax for the title of the 2008 Communities in Bloom National Champion in the population category of 300,000 plus. The City was evaluated in eight criteria areas: tidiness; environmental awareness; community involvement; natural and cultural heritage conservation; tree/urban forest management; landscape areas; floral displays and turf and groundcovers.
The Communities in Bloom program (CIB) builds upon the motto of 'People, Plants and Pride, Growing Together.' Initially developed in 1995, the program is designed to foster civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of friendly competition. Municipalities are evaluated in key areas: floral displays, turf and groundcovers, landscaped areas, natural and cultural heritage conservation, community involvement, tidiness, tree/urban forest management and environmental awareness. In addition, significant points are awarded for showcasing the involvement and participation of all sectors of the community.
